विवाद बढ़ता देख बरेली के मेयर उमेश गौतम ने अपनी सफाई पेश की है। उन्होंने कहा कि उनका इरादा किसी की भावनाओं को ठेस पहुंचाना नहीं था और उन्होंने अनजाने में ऐसा किया। मेयर ने दावा किया कि उनके एक समर्थक ने उनके जन्मदिन पर सरप्राइज देने के लिए मंदिर के अंदर केक लाया था और उन्हें इस बात की जानकारी नहीं थी कि मंदिर के अंदर ऐसा करना गलत है। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि वह मंदिर और उसकी परंपराओं का सम्मान करते हैं और भविष्य में ऐसी किसी भी गतिविधि से बचेंगे।
