Water levels in the Ghaghra and Chhoti Gandak rivers in Deoria district are rising rapidly, instilling fear of floods among villagers in low-lying areas. The situation is exacerbated by the dilapidated condition of several embankments along the riverbanks, which have not been repaired despite repeated complaints. Local residents state that this problem intensifies every monsoon season, yet only assurances are received from the administration, with no concrete action on the ground.

Villagers in several blocks of Deoria district, through which these rivers flow, are particularly apprehensive. Continuous rainfall over the past few days and water flowing from upper regions have caused river levels to approach the danger mark. Residents have repeatedly informed the Irrigation Department and local administration, both verbally and in writing, about the poor state of the embankments. They had also warned that failure to carry out timely repairs could lead to significant damage in the event of a flood.

The dilapidated embankments could allow river water to inundate populated areas, causing damage to crops and posing a risk to lives and property. Based on past experiences, villagers are concerned that if immediate action is not taken, they may again face displacement and substantial losses. There is a strong demand for the administration to initiate immediate repairs of the dilapidated embankments and implement robust flood prevention measures to protect thousands of families from potential devastation.
