The Kuchaykot Community Health Center (CHC) in Gopalganj, despite having won the 'Kayakalp' award twice for cleanliness and excellent health services, is currently grappling with a severe shortage of doctors and healthcare staff. This 30-bed hospital, responsible for the healthcare needs of approximately four lakh people across 222 villages, sees around 100 patients daily.

Out of 16 sanctioned positions for doctors, only three, including the in-charge medical officer, are currently working. While two specialist doctors were deployed in February, one, Dr. Jitendra Kumar, has been absent without notice for a long time. Currently, only the gynecologist, Dr. Vandana Kumari, provides specialist services. An ophthalmologist is deputed from another hospital and offers services only three days a week. Critical positions like dental surgeon, pediatrician, and general physician have been vacant for an extended period, as has the आयुष doctor's post for about a year.

The shortage of nursing staff is also significantly impacting hospital operations. Only three GNM nurses are managing patient care against 27 sanctioned posts, affecting both treatment and care. An X-ray machine is available, but the technician, deputed from Thave, is only present on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, leaving the X-ray room closed for the rest of the week. This forces patients to rely on private diagnostic centers, incurring additional costs.

Emergency treatment facilities are also underutilized. On March 26, a social organization donated advanced life-saving equipment worth over six lakh rupees to provide better care during the 'golden hour' for accident victims. However, due to a lack of trained technical staff, these devices are not being used effectively. The hospital has also been without anti-rabies injections and snakebite medication for a long time, compelling patients to seek these services elsewhere. Health Manager Jitendra Singh stated that a letter regarding the staff shortage has been sent to the district office, and efforts are being made to provide the best possible services with available resources.
