JDU MLA Gopal Kumar Agarwal from Thakurganj assembly constituency in Kishanganj has reportedly received a death threat, along with obscene comments made against him on social media. Agarwal has filed an FIR at Thakurganj police station, prompting an investigation by the police.

In his application to the police, MLA Agarwal stated that on July 24, 2026, a picture of his statement in the Bihar Assembly regarding granting EBC status to the Surjapuri Muslim community was shared on Facebook. It is alleged that a Facebook user named 'Mohammad Shahid alias Babuwa Bhai' made abusive and objectionable comments about his mother on this post. According to the MLA, the accused also made a red cross mark on his picture, which he interpreted as a death threat. The MLA informed that, to his knowledge, the accused is a resident of Kadwa in Katihar district.

MLA Agarwal expressed that this incident has hurt his personal feelings and damaged his reputation as a public representative. He has demanded strict legal action against the accused under relevant sections. The threats followed MLA Gopal Kumar Agarwal's statement in the Bihar Assembly where he referred to some members of the Surjapuri Muslim community as Bangladeshis. The Facebook post, along with the offensive language, reportedly stated, "What is Gopal Agarwal, Kishanganj MLA, saying about the Shershahwadi community? Infiltrators and Bangladeshis were not born then, we are descendants of Sher Shah Suri, perhaps you are forgetting and ruining your political career and future."

Thakurganj police station has confirmed that an FIR has been registered based on the MLA's application. The police stated that the investigation into the matter is ongoing, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
