गया जिले के बाराचट्टी प्रखंड स्थित इमलियाटांड़ गांव का दसवीं कक्षा का छात्र करण कुमार दोनों हाथ न होने के बावजूद प्रतिदिन लगभग 10 किलोमीटर साइकिल चलाकर स्कूल और ट्यूशन जाता है। बचपन में 11 हजार वोल्ट के बिजली तार की चपेट में आने से उसे अपने दोनों हाथ गंवाने पड़े थे। करण का लक्ष्य पढ़-लिखकर एक अधिकारी बनना है।
करण हाई स्कूल नावाडीह में दसवीं कक्षा में पढ़ता है, जो उसके घर से करीब तीन किलोमीटर दूर है। स्कूल आने-जाने के अलावा वह ट्यूशन के लिए भी साइकिल से जाता है, जिससे वह प्रतिदिन कुल 10 किलोमीटर से अधिक की दूरी तय करता है। कटे हाथों के सहारे वह न केवल लिखता है और किताबें पढ़ता है, बल्कि मोबाइल भी चलाता है।
करण की मां सोनवा देवी ने बताया कि जब करण आठ-नौ वर्ष का था, तब वह घर के पास से गुजर रहे 11 हजार वोल्ट के बिजली के तार की चपेट में आ गया था। इस हादसे में वह बुरी तरह झुलस गया, और डॉक्टरों ने उसकी जान बचाने के लिए दोनों हाथ काटने की सलाह दी। हादसे के बाद करण के इलाज में परिवार को लाखों रुपये खर्च करने पड़े और कर्ज भी लेना पड़ा। निजी डॉक्टर को दोनों हाथ काटने के लिए करीब दो लाख रुपये का भुगतान किया गया था।
हाथ कटने के बाद करण कुछ समय तक निराश रहा, लेकिन मां के प्रोत्साहन से उसने हिम्मत जुटाई। उसने पहले पैरों से लिखने का प्रयास किया और बाद में कटे हाथों के सहारे लिखना सीख लिया। अब वह सुंदर लिखता है और सामान्य तरीके से मोबाइल भी चला लेता है। करण का कहना है कि वह पढ़ाई करके ऑफिसर बनना चाहता है। वह रोज स्कूल और ट्यूशन के बाद घर पर करीब दो घंटे अतिरिक्त पढ़ाई करता है। उसका सपना सरकारी नौकरी हासिल कर अपने परिवार की जिंदगी बेहतर बनाना है। करण महादलित परिवार से आता है। उसके पिता देवा मांझी खेतों में मजदूरी करते हैं, जबकि मां सोनवा देवी भी मेहनत-मजदूरी कर परिवार का सहयोग करती हैं।

Karan attends High School Nawadih, which is about three kilometers from his home. In addition to commuting to school, he also cycles to tuition, covering over 10 kilometers daily. He writes, reads books, and even operates a mobile phone using his stumps.
His mother, Sonwa Devi, shared that when Karan was eight or nine years old, he was severely electrocuted by an 11,000-volt power line near their house. Doctors advised amputating both his hands to save his life. The family incurred significant expenses, including about two lakh rupees paid to a private doctor for the amputations, and had to take out loans for his treatment.
Initially, Karan was disheartened after the accident, but his mother's encouragement helped him regain his spirit. He first attempted to write with his feet and later learned to write using his stumps. He now writes neatly and uses his mobile phone normally. Karan expresses his ambition to become an officer and studies for about two extra hours daily after school and tuition. His dream is to secure a government job and improve his family's life. Karan comes from a Mahadalit family; his father, Deva Manjhi, works as a farm laborer, and his mother, Sonwa Devi, also contributes to the family's income through labor.
