AISA-RYA Protest in Patna Over Voter List Irregularities, Dakbungalow Chowk Affected
In Patna, student organizations All India Students Association (AISA) and Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA) staged a protest on Tuesday, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleging irregularities in the voter list. The protesters had announced a Raj Bhavan march, leading to heightened security in key areas of the city. A large police force was deployed around Gandhi Maidan, Dakbungalow Chowk, SP Verma Road, and Hotel Maurya.
The district administration had designated Gardanibagh as the official protest site, but demonstrators gathered near Gandhi Maidan from various directions. They broke through police barricades at JP Golambar and proceeded towards Dakbungalow Chowk, where they attempted to breach further barricades. The situation remained tense with a possibility of lathi-charge, causing significant disruption to traffic.
CPI-ML MLA Sandeep Saurabh raised serious concerns about alleged discrepancies in the voter list and the functioning of the Election Commission. He claimed that a large number of voters' names were removed, and the process of adding new names was biased. Saba, the state vice-president of AISA, alleged that during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar, even living individuals were declared deceased, disenfranchising them.
Protesters intend to submit a memorandum to the Governor, demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and the cancellation of the SIR process. The administration had appealed to the protesters to use the designated site, citing public inconvenience and traffic disruptions, but their plea was disregarded.
