Heavy rainfall on Monday in Siwan city once again exposed the glaring deficiencies in the municipal council's drainage system. Just about an hour of rain transformed the city's main roads into vast ponds, causing immense inconvenience to residents. Most low-lying areas and major thoroughfares were waterlogged, creating significant difficulties for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Among the worst-affected areas were Station Road, Babunia Road, JP Chowk, Ramrajya Mor, Hospital Road, and Shukla Toli. These localities saw knee-deep water accumulation, slowing down vehicular movement to a crawl, and leading to several motorcycle breakdowns. Residents were hesitant to even step out of their homes.

Local residents voiced their frustration, stating that waterlogging has become an annual problem in Siwan, even after light showers. They allege that the municipal council neglects the maintenance and cleaning of the drainage system. Irregular cleaning results in clogged drains, impeding water flow and causing rainwater to collect on the streets, forcing people to contend with severe waterlogging.

The issue directly impacts daily life. School children were forced to brave the rain, while shopkeepers were distressed by water accumulating outside their establishments. Businesses also suffered as people avoided venturing out due to the pervasive waterlogging.

Citizens have urged the municipal council to find a permanent solution to this serious problem. They emphasized that while there is talk of making Siwan a smart city, basic amenities remain neglected. They called for the repair of the drainage system, ensuring regular cleaning of drains, and implementing concrete measures to prevent future waterlogging.
