Two women employees were trapped for nearly an hour in the lift of Siwan Model Sadar Hospital on Sunday due to a power outage. The lift got stuck between the first and second floors after the power backup failed, raising serious questions about the hospital's emergency preparedness and maintenance.

The two Jeevika employees were on their way up for duty when the power suddenly went out. The power backup system did not activate, causing the lift to halt. Although power was restored after about ten minutes, the lift remained non-functional. The women inside could not call for help due to a lack of mobile network.

After a prolonged period of shouting from inside the lift, sanitation workers heard their cries and informed the hospital administration. Staff attempted to restart the lift without success. Security personnel on site also lacked clear instructions on how to open the lift in an emergency.

When hospital staff could not open the lift, workers from the adjacent under-construction MCH building were called. Approximately an hour later, an employee from the construction agency arrived and opened the lift door with a key, allowing the women to be freed. Following their release, the hospital's lack of a suitable ladder for such emergencies meant male staff had to carry the women downstairs.

This incident occurred just one day after the issue of the Model Sadar Hospital's lift was discussed in a health department review meeting chaired by the District Magistrate. The DM had sought information from the DGM of BMSICL (Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited) regarding the lift's condition. Hospital Superintendent Dr. Anil Kumar Singh stated that on-duty security personnel would now be provided with lift keys, and that BMSICL had been contacted multiple times regarding the lift's recurring problems.
