A permanent solution to the decades-old irrigation problems in Islampur and Ekangarsarai blocks of Nalanda district now seems within reach. Following an initiative by JDU MLA Ruhel Ranjan, Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary has ordered departmental officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for increasing the capacity of the main Mahmooda Canal from Udera Sthan Barrage to facilitate the flow of one thousand cusecs of water.

MLA Ruhel Ranjan met the Deputy Chief Minister in Patna to present his case. He highlighted that irregular rainfall and declining groundwater levels have caused significant difficulties for farmers in irrigation. By widening and increasing the carrying capacity of the Mahmooda Canal, sufficient water can be delivered to the fields. Additionally, a demand has been made to ensure adequate water supply from Udera Barrage to the Muhane and Jalwar rivers, which will benefit other blocks as well.

This project is expected to not only resolve irrigation issues but also improve groundwater levels. The availability of sufficient water in the canals will reduce farmers' reliance on private borewells and groundwater. Water reaching the rivers is also anticipated to aid in groundwater recharge. Udera Sthan Barrage currently provides irrigation facilities to a large area in Nalanda and surrounding districts.

Last month, MP Kaushalendra Kumar also inspected the Udera Sthan Barrage to assess water availability in the canals and supply to farmers. He had ordered the removal of obstructions in the Islampur-Aungaridham Canal and ensured water delivery to fields. MLA Ruhel Ranjan expressed confidence that once the DPR is prepared, the project will be expedited, providing permanent irrigation facilities to farmers in Islampur and Ekangarsarai.
