After two days of heavy rainfall in Nepal's catchment areas, the weather has cleared, leading to a gradual decrease in the water level of the Gandak (Narayani) river. This has brought some relief to the riparian regions, but pressure on the sensitive points of the Chitauni embankment in Khadda, Kushinagar, remains. Flood division officials are continuously monitoring the situation and ensuring round-the-clock surveillance for the embankment's safety.

By Wednesday evening, the Gandak river's discharge decreased from 1,26,500 cusecs to 1,23,000 cusecs. Approximately 3,500 cusecs of water reduced in the last 24 hours. While the decrease in water flow has somewhat averted the flood threat, the department is not yet ready to consider it a complete relief. Officials state that if rainfall resumes in Nepal's hilly regions, the water level could rise again. Therefore, full vigilance is being maintained.

At the Bhainsaha gauge, the Gandak river was flowing 30 centimeters above the warning level of 95 meters on Wednesday evening. However, continuous drops were recorded during the evening and night, bringing the river to just 7 centimeters above the warning level. This reduction in water level has brought a sigh of relief to residents of riverside villages, though the administration has appealed to people to avoid unnecessary movement near the river and remain vigilant.

Despite the reduced discharge, the main current of the river is still flowing close to the rehabilitated spurs. In several places, spurs have been affected by the river's strong current, and some are in a launching state, raising concerns for the flood division regarding the embankment's safety. Officials emphasize that while the drop in water level is a relief, the river's current remains strong, and no negligence can be afforded on the embankment. Departmental staff are patrolling day and night, keeping an eye on every activity.
