A total of 382 pregnant women were screened at a special camp organized under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA). The primary objective of this camp was to provide free antenatal check-ups and health services by specialist doctors to pregnant women, aiming to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. However, during this crucial program, ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers expressed strong dissatisfaction over the deduction in their incentive payments.
ASHA workers stated that they play a vital role in making this campaign successful. They undertake various tasks such as visiting homes to bring pregnant women to the camps, registering them, and providing information about health services. Despite their significant contributions, they view the reduction in their incentive payments as a demotivating step. They alleged that previously, they received a higher incentive for each pregnant woman registered and screened, but this amount has now been reduced.
ASHA workers have warned that if the deduction in their incentive payments is not reversed and they are not provided with adequate remuneration, they may withdraw their services from future camps and other health programs. This dissatisfaction could pose a challenge to the smooth functioning of health services, as ASHA workers are considered the backbone of healthcare in rural and urban areas. It is imperative for the concerned health authorities to address these issues promptly to ensure the successful implementation of crucial programs like PMSMA.
