The Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at Kishanganj Sadar Hospital is treating critically ill and premature newborns with limited resources. Due to a shortage of radiant warmers, it often becomes necessary to place two newborns on a single warmer. This practice increases the risk of infection and puts additional strain on the treatment system. Residents and doctors in the district have called for the provision of additional radiant warmers to meet the increasing patient load.

Currently, the SNCU is equipped with 14 radiant warmers, two C-PAP machines, five radiant phototherapy units, and four Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) chairs for mothers. A dedicated team of three pediatricians and trained nursing staff provides round-the-clock monitoring and treatment for critically ill newborns.

From April 1st to August 3rd, a total of 263 newborns were treated at the SNCU, with 223 successfully recovering and returning home. Twenty-five critically ill newborns were referred to higher institutions, and two unfortunately passed away during treatment. During the same period, 27 newborns weighing less than two kilograms or born prematurely were successfully treated and discharged. In July, the SNCU successfully treated six weak twin newborns, including those of Nazmeen Nisha, Seema Bano, and Sanjana Kumari, all of whom had very low birth weights.
